At the same moment as the Main Menu appears, the Compressor pump for the system is started, if it is not already in operation. As with most of the Menus in the HYPOXIA system, the Main Menu requires the user to enter one of a number of valid options. In this case the user may press keys 1 to 5:
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | H Y P O X I A | | (Patient Menu) | | | | | | | | | | Enter new patient [1] | | | | Select database patient [2] | | | | List patients in database [3] | | | | Return to Main Menu [4] | | | | | | | | Enter choice: | | | | | | | | | | | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+The user must select whether the patient is new to the HYPOXIA system, or whether the patient is already in the HYPOXIA database.
For a new patient, enter "1", and see the description of the "Patient Data" Menu.
To list the names of patients currently held in the HYPOXIA database, enter "3", and see the description of the "Database Patients" Menu.
To select one of the patient names in the database, enter "2", and move to the description of the "Database Patients" Menu.
Otherwise, enter "4" to return to the HYPOXIA Main Menu.

Care must be taken when entering data. Incorrect data (consisting of illegal characters or invalid numbers) cause the cursor to "stick" at the current position, and not move to the next field. In addition, a blinking "Bad Value..." message appears on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. A correctly filled in Patient Data Menu is shown below:
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | H Y P O X I A | | (Patient Data) | | | | | | Patient 1 Name : W.A.Mozart | | Number of cycles : 5 | | Breathe times in minutes : 1,2,1,2,1 | | Rest times in minutes : 2,2,2,2,2 | | Oxygen concentrations : 9,8,7,6,5 | | (Total treatment time : 17 minutes) | | | | | | Patient 2 Name :| | | Number of cycles : | | Breathe times in minutes : | | Rest times in minutes : | | Oxygen concentrations : | | (Total treatment time : | | | | | | | | | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+The patient's name may contain any characters, and has a limit of 32 characters in length. The number of cycles is the number of cycles of "Breath-Rest" that the patient's treatment consists of. For Mozart, this will be five cycles: he will breath HYPOXIA gas five times, and rest five times. The Breath times are specified as a comma-delimited list which corresponds to each cycle. The Rest times and Oxygen concentrations follow suit. So that, on Mozart's first cycle he will breath HYPOXIA gas at a concentration of 9% for one minute, and then will rest for two minutes. On the next cycle the Oxygen concentration will be 8% and he will breath it for two minutes, and again rest for two minutes. And so on, until he has completed the five specified cycles. The total treatment time is calculated by the HYPOXIA program, and in this case is 17 minutes. The user does NOT have to enter this value!
After completing the data for one patient, the cursor will move to the patient name field for a second patient. If it is only required to enter one patient at this time, then pressing the "Enter" key will return to the Main Menu. Otherwise, a second patient can be added in an identical way to the first.
Once the data have been entered for one or both patients, then the Write Data Menu appears.

This will mean it will be available when the patient next comes for HYPOXIA treatment.
If you do not wish the data to be written to the database, enter "N" or "n", or simply press the Enter key.
If patient data are successfully written to the database, then the following message appears:
"Database rewritten. Any key to continue ..."
Press any key to return to the Main Menu. (If the HYPOXIA database is full, then it will be necessary to start a new database. This requires selecting the Special Commands Menu, entering a new database name, and then selecting the Patient Data Menu, then selecting option 4 [return to Main Menu]. The HYPOXIA database can contain the names of up to 45 patients.)

To select one of the displayed patient names, enter the number that appears in square brackets before the name. For example, to select W.A.Mozart, enter 4.
If the required patient data is not in the database, enter 0 to return to the Main Menu.

Only while the system display is shown will the patient(s) receive HYPOXIA treatment. The system display shows the current time of day, and a set of data for each patient. These data are updated every second on the display. When the HYPOXIA system is adjusting the O2 level for either patient, then a message appears on the bottom line of the System Display, such as "Up-oxygen for Patient 2". These messages are informational only, and can be ignored.
To exit from the System Display, press the Enter key, and then PLEASE WAIT! In a very short while, the Interrupt Menu will appear.

In the example Menu above, there are two patients currently receiving treatment in the system. For each patient, a choice can be made whether to Pause the treatment (perhaps the patient needs to go for a coffee), Finish the treatment, Restart the treatment (in the case where the treatment is currently paused), and finally to Replace the patient. The last option is useful in the case where one patient of two has finished her or his treatment, and it is required to start a new patient in the available "slot".
The Interrupt Menu also allows the possibilities of returning to the Main Menu or exiting from the HYPOXIA system program.
