The HYPOXIA Main Menu appears when the HYPOXIA system is switched on, or when the command HYPOXIA is typed at the DOS prompt A:>. At the same moment as the Main Menu appears, the Compressor pump for the system is started, if it is not already in operation. As with most of the Menus in the HYPOXIA system, the Main Menu requires the user to enter one of a number of valid options. In this case the user may press keys 1 to 5:
  • Option [1] "Set up Patients" : move to the Patient Data menu. Patient data must be entered before the HYPOXIA system can fully start. Patient data may be entered from the keyboard, or loaded from a HYPOXIA database from a previous treatment session.
  • Option [2] "Start or Continue Treatment" : once the Patients have been "set up", then the HYPOXIA system can be started. If the treatment characteristics of one or both patients has been changed, then the HYPOXIA system can be re-started with this option.
  • Option [3] "Shut down HYPOXIA system" : the compressor is turned off, and the HYPOXIA Menu system exits. This would be the normal procedure when the HYPOXIA machine is likely to be unused for a long period.
  • Option [4] "Special Commands" : this allows access, for expert users, to the special commands menu.
  • Option [5] "List Current Patients" : if one or more patients have been "set up" or have already started their treatment, then this option will show their treatment parameters in the format provided by the "Patient Data" menu.

For a new patient, enter "1", and see the description of the "Patient Data" Menu.

To list the names of patients currently held in the HYPOXIA database, enter "3", and see the description of the "Database Patients" Menu.

To select one of the patient names in the database, enter "2", and move to the description of the "Database Patients" Menu.

Otherwise, enter "4" to return to the HYPOXIA Main Menu.

The data for one, or two, patients may be entered in the Patient Data Menu. Care must be taken when entering data. Incorrect data (consisting of illegal characters or invalid numbers) cause the cursor to "stick" at the current position, and not move to the next field. In addition, a blinking "Bad Value..." message appears on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. A correctly filled in Patient Data Menu is shown below:

The patient's name may contain any characters, and has a limit of 32 characters in length. The number of cycles is the number of cycles of "Breath-Rest" that the patient's treatment consists of. For Mozart, this will be five cycles: he will breath HYPOXIA gas five times, and rest five times. The Breath times are specified as a comma-delimited list which corresponds to each cycle. The Rest times and Oxygen concentrations follow suit. So that, on Mozart's first cycle he will breath HYPOXIA gas at a concentration of 9% for one minute, and then will rest for two minutes. On the next cycle the Oxygen concentration will be 8% and he will breath it for two minutes, and again rest for two minutes. And so on, until he has completed the five specified cycles. The total treatment time is calculated by the HYPOXIA program, and in this case is 17 minutes. The user does NOT have to enter this value!

After completing the data for one patient, the cursor will move to the patient name field for a second patient. If it is only required to enter one patient at this time, then pressing the "Enter" key will return to the Main Menu. Otherwise, a second patient can be added in an identical way to the first.

Once the data have been entered for one or both patients, then the Write Data Menu appears.

Type "Y" or "y" to enter the patient data into the HYPOXIA database. This will mean it will be available when the patient next comes for HYPOXIA treatment.

If you do not wish the data to be written to the database, enter "N" or "n", or simply press the Enter key.

If patient data are successfully written to the database, then the following message appears:

"Database rewritten. Any key to continue ..."

Press any key to return to the Main Menu. (If the HYPOXIA database is full, then it will be necessary to start a new database. This requires selecting the Special Commands Menu, entering a new database name, and then selecting the Patient Data Menu, then selecting option 4 [return to Main Menu]. The HYPOXIA database can contain the names of up to 45 patients.)

The HYPOXIA system display is started when Option 2 is selected in the Main Menu. Only while the system display is shown will the patient(s) receive HYPOXIA treatment. The system display shows the current time of day, and a set of data for each patient. These data are updated every second on the display.
  • The Patient O2 level is a display which indicates the measured concentration of Oxygen in the HYPOXIA gas, both as a percentage (to two decimal places), and as a bar chart which moves from left to right as the concentration increases. The bar chart is calibrated in the range 7 to 20%. When the concentration is below the required value (as specified for each patient), a small downwards blinking arrow will appear to the right of the percentage figure. When the concentration is above the required level, then an upwards arrow appears. When the concentration is at the correct value (witin errors), then a smiling face appears!
  • The elapsed time is the time since HYPOXIA treatment began. This time does not include time when the system was paused. It is thus the sum of the total breath times and the total rest times so far, for each patient.
  • The O2 Target is the Oxygen concentration, in percent, specified for the current treatment cycle for the patient.
  • The Cycle number is the number of the current cycle the patient is on. This starts at one, and finishes at the total number of cycles specified for the patient.
  • The HYPOXIA time is the integrated time spent so far breathing HYPOXIA gas, for each patient.
  • The target cycles is the total number of cycles contained in the patient's treatment. When this number of cycles have been completed, then the patient's treatment will have finished.
  • The Status describes the current state of the cycle the patient is on: it can be "Breathing", "Resting", "Paused" or "FINISHED".
  • When the HYPOXIA system is adjusting the O2 level for either patient, then a message appears on the bottom line of the System Display, such as "Up-oxygen for Patient 2". These messages are informational only, and can be ignored.

To exit from the System Display, press the Enter key, and then PLEASE WAIT! In a very short while, the Interrupt Menu will appear.

The contents of the Interrupt Menu depend to some extent on a) the number of patients currently defined to the system, and b) each of their states. In the example Menu above, there are two patients currently receiving treatment in the system. For each patient, a choice can be made whether to Pause the treatment (perhaps the patient needs to go for a coffee), Finish the treatment, Restart the treatment (in the case where the treatment is currently paused), and finally to Replace the patient. The last option is useful in the case where one patient of two has finished her or his treatment, and it is required to start a new patient in the available "slot".

The Interrupt Menu also allows the possibilities of returning to the Main Menu or exiting from the HYPOXIA system program.
