Hallicrafters 5R100A Communications Receiver (Run 4, S/N F153782)

Another Ebay purchase. This 5R100 cost me $25. The dial string was broken, and the main electrolytic capacitor was leaking and clearly bad. Other than that, the radio was in good condition.

Here's a photo from the seller:

You will notice that there are three knobs without metal inserts, and one with. The 5R10 I have had three knobs with metal inserts, and one without. So between the two, I had a nice pair of matching four knob sets :-)

More pictures:

The dial glass after cleaning. I re-strung the tuning control using fishing line. At the time I didn't have a re-stringing diagram, so was working from first principles. Amazingly, it works.

The 5R100 is reportedly the same as the 5R10. I certainly haven't noticed any differences, except on the dial glass markings. In the picture above you can see two "CD" circles on the topmost BC band. These are not present on the 5R10 dial glass. Also, interestingly, they are not present on the picture of the 5R100 in Chuck Dachis' book.

Halfway through re-capping. The big electrolytic has been snipped out:
