A set of tracks originate from the detector centre and, curling in the magnetic field, deposit hits on the tracker detector layers. The task of the Genetic Algorithm is to find each of the tracks.

The goal is to minimise a cost function that includes the summed length of each track's individual segments, and the number of discontinuities, or kinks, in the track.

The source.
